One version of any number of songs written about the Erie Canal, an early 19th century engineering feat that enabled New York to become the "Empire State." I drew from Bob Gibson's version of this great old folk song.

Hi John. great tune, nice pickin, and singin. well done.
The canal had something to do with access to the great lakes independant of them pesky Canucks ( British back then ) didn't it ?? Sorry for creatin all the fuss, but it led to a good song anyway.

Not only do I know where the Erie canal is but I also am very fond of Gin, these are handed down to me by 5 generations of Michiganders All who lived North of Canada. In other words good job on this tune that I learned in grade school, including the verse about the distress signal, Schools uesed to have a sense of humor. Thanks for this tune John I brings it all back.......Steve

Awesome!
I'm learning this from Tim Jumpers book and to flat pick it on guitar.
