We have Pileated woodpeckers on OK. The old timers call them Molly Hens and used to eat them. Apparently there is a lot of meat on their neck and shoulders. They sound like someone driving 16 penny nails when they are digging grubbs out of trees. Most I have seen are pretty wiley and don't let you get close very easy. These are good pictures, how'd you get so close, maybe telephoto?

Actually I'm very close. I built this bird feeder and hung it on our back porch deck. I am inside the house about 8-10 feet away with a 3x or 4x lens and the picture is taken through a window.
The feeder is made from a small alder we cut while clearing for our cabin. I drilled 1 inch holes it the piece of firewood and fill them with a mix of lard and oatmeal. Both the male and female are making lots of visits right now. I suspect they have a nest close by since they fly in-and-out from the same direction.
I helped out with a pileated woodpecker research study back in 1980 and the closest I ever got then was about 50 feet.
