Hi, Amber... There's a lot of names for this instrument- Gullywhanger is just one. Call it anything you want, and come up with something colorful! The head's broken, but there are a lot of these things around, all home-made with lots of variations. They are played by bumping the stick up and down on the floor with the left hand, which provides the basic rhythm. A drum stick is commonly used in the right hand to play the counter rhythms, fills, etc. on the tambourine head, rim, cymbals, stick or anything attached. This one looks like it has a set of blocks and a cowbell, both used like a drummer would use them. These were once very common music makers, and lots of folks played them. Some actually got very good, and made them sound almost like a drum set.
