Lavonia, Georgia, 1973

Here I am, picking with Joel Daves and Davy McGowan at the old Lavonia bluegrass festival. The banjo was a mint-condition Fender Concertone, sn 01011, with a beautiful butterfly-grain walnut resonator, which I'd recently bought from Jesse Miller.

I did some of my first jamming at the Shoal Creek festival there in Lavonia about 6 years after your photo was taken.  That used to be one of the biggest festivals... all the top groups were there.  Fond memories.
