No Name Banjo

Posted 10/17/2007 1:41:22 PM

Here's a funky old no-name I've had since 1969. A friend put the copper plate on it in the 70s. We now have nylgut strings on it and it's a lot happier. Nora also put a nice skin head on it.

Pretty, funky or not. It's a little hard to tell from this photo, but he peghead looks like a Buckbee. Have you ruled that out?

We have always considered it to be a Buckbee, though Buckbee was sometimes just an after-market brand name. I found a similar generic banjo at a yard sale outside Pittsboro about 25 years ago. It was not restorable to playing condition but I thought it was interesting---a banjo from the Piedmont with worn spots on the back of the neck at the 7th - 12th frets. Someone had played it "Charlie Poole style!"
