This reel, deliberately kept to three parts, was made famous by Dubliners' tenor banjoist Barney McKenna. On guitar is maestro Gabriel Donohue from Athenry, and on bodhrán is Robbie Walsh from Dublin. Notice the trebles, triplets and fretting-hand ornamentation in this version. The banjo is way out front in the mix. This recording matches the tablature, indicating picking-hand choices, and is intended for students at all levels. With gratitude to Mel Bay for letting me upload this here, another sample from my first book/CD, Complete Book of Irish & Celtic 5-String Banjo - find it here: http://www.melbay.com/Products/95759BCD/complete-book-of-irish--celtic-5string-banjo.aspx

So cool to see you post some tunes here! I especially like this Mason's Apron. Great triplets. Your Avatar: you're a lucky guy to be hanging out with Sharron Shannon! John D

S'wonderful... s'marvelous... you are going to force me to expand my Celtic repitoire. I already do Garry Owen and Irish Washerwoman (not well mind you) but you entice me to add more.

Thanks everybody. There are so many variations to this tune, but here is a place to start, with just three parts. In Ireland there are so many versions, and I recently heard a new killer rendition of this - still unreleased - by a young female tenor banjoist from Cavan. So I'll be trying out even more variations - trying to get an advance copy of her project. Diarmaid, we play the same McKenna variation on the A section, and thank you for the kind words. We have some brilliant sessions in Longford, if you ever need a bed....

That's a huge compliment coming from you. I spend a lot of time keeping those triplets in shape, just going to sessions and putting them in with the usual suspects.

Tom you rock. I've been learning sgruggs style bluegrass for three years now, I started with Jack Hatfields tutor, then Tony Trischkas then Pete Wernicks, now onto Ross Nickerson's encyclopedia but although it's all great stuff the old Irish tunes get everybody's toes tapping. my maternal greatgrandparents were Irish and it's in the blood as they say. so when I settle down with the stuff I've learned so far it's into some of that for sure. keep up the good work.
