Longtime friend Dave Parker does the guitar, vocal, and harmonica parts on this recording, and I just sort of fill in with a little banjo. Dave and I hadn't ever played it together, and it had been thirty years since I heard him perform it, but we did this with only one run through before the actual recording.

This is an old hymn that my father and his shipmates used to sing during World War II. This is one of the few songs where I actually sing lead, although my group rarely performs it.

This was recorded with an MXL 990 on a KORG D888 digital recorder. BTW, I am no way responsible for the excellent music. My friend George is the instrumentalist, and I am just the guy who recorded it.

Another old Irish song. Gary is again playing guitar and singing, D.d. is providing the outstanding female vocal part, and I'm playing a banjola (five string banjo neck on mandola-body). The banjola kind of blends in with the guitar and is hard to hear, but it's the brighter, ringing sound.

This is my friend D.d. and her rendition of a great old folk song. We recorded the guitar and vocal in about ten minutes on our way to a gig, and I added the banjo later. This is a simpler, cleaner remix of something I had previously posted.

Torben Pederson suggested that the banjo part should be louder, so I did a remix. I am leaving the old version up so my online friends can compare. Torben, thanks for the advice! Incidentally, the banjo is recorded on two tracks. I record the verses on one track and the choruses on another, which makes it easier to redo one section if something goes awry. Operating the recorder and playing the banjo at the same time is tricky, and this gives me a few seconds to switch gears.

Old Time Irish Song. Wildwood Folk (Jess, D.d., Gary,and me) performing a song that we do at just about every gig. Lead vocals by Gary. This was played on an inexpensive Morgan Monroe banjo (resonator model with brass tone ring). I was wearing picks, but I muted the sound by stuffing the pot with rags.

This test is a side-by-side comparison of the Fishman banjo pickup versus the Gold Tone ABS. I hooked both up to the same banjo and recorded at the same time on a Korg digital recorder. The Fishman in in the right channel and the Gold Tone is in the left. The banjo is an Epiphone MB 250 played with bare fingers (no picks). I used the Gone Tone Pre Amp with the volume and all 3 EQ channels boosted to the max. The Fishman has been installed in this banjo for over a year and had been carefully tweaked to produce a tone that is very close to the original banjo. The wiring in my house produces a hum (you can really hear it on the Fishman) which is not typical of most of the venues we play, so this is a worst case scenario.

I really don't know what to call this, maybe a modified Seeger strum, but whatever it is, it's kind of what I'm going for, except that I would like to go further in this direction and I'm not sure how to make that happen. I recorded this with bare fingers on an Epiphone MB 250, key of Bb (G formation, capo at the third fret).
