Steve Arkin - banjo Tony Rice- guitar David Grisman - mandolin Todd Phillips - bass From the Acoustic Disc download album "Gasoline Brothers" consisting of 9 tracks recorded by David Grisman at his home in 1977. Salt Creek is one of those tracks--and of which have the same personnel and instrumentation. The album contains six additional tracks that were recorded from a radio broadcast in Japan in 1976. The album is called Gasoline Brothers because Tony Rice used to joke how he and David put a heavy foot on the gas pedal whenever they played together. Straight from the first rehearsal of the newly reconstituted LIGHTNING IN THE EAST, with Stephanie Coleman on fiddle, Steve Arkin on banjo, and Erica Weiss on guitar. Pardon the preliminary talking--we'd never played this before. The tune was collected by Bruce Greene (I don't know his source).

Derek Halsey sent me this recording of an interview he conducted with Steve Martin on the day after Pete Wernick and I spent many hours coaching Steve for his (then) upcoming tour to promote his banjo CD, The Crow. In it Steve discussed his love of clawhammer banjo and he talks about the fact that I brought my IPod and played a number of my favorite clawhammer heroes for him. He was especially taken with Adam Hurt (although he forgot Adam's last name). He also said kind things about Pete and me (go figure).

From a session at Mount Airy 2012 with me on banjo. I won't name the fiddler and guitar player until I get their permission. I haven't posted much Round Peak stuff--I thought this was a pretty good remedy for that.

Emmett Lundy's version of the tune variously known as Susananna Gal, Fly Around, Shady Grove, Western Country, Pretty Little Pink, Weevily Wheat, and countless others. This was recorded at a session at Mount Airy 2012, with me on banjo--I'll get around to posting the identities of the excellent fiddler and guitar player once I catch up with them and get their OK.

Jam at Mount Airy, 2010: Andy Williams and Nate Leath--fiddles; Steve Arkin-banjo; Erica Weiss-guitar; Toni Williams-bass. This tune was originally collected by Alan Lomax in a 1937 recording of William Stepp or Salyerville, KY. I read somewhere that other fiddlers in the region called this tune "Who's Been Here Since I've Been Gone"--so maybe Lomax messed up on his data--or maybe not, But the name Ways of the World has stuck.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! Here's a nice romantic version of an old-time classic from a January 10th session at Rhys Jones' House in Warrenton, VA (I posted four other tracks but saved this one for V-Day). Notice that, on this and the other two songs, Rhys has gotten really good at playing the fiddle and singing at the same time. Fiddle and vocals--Rhys Jones 3-finger banjo--Steve Arkin Guitar and vocals--Jason Ashby
