Adam Hurt-fiddle, Beth Hartness-guitar, and Steve Arkin-banjo, playing Hiram Stamper's squirrelly version of Hog Eyed Man at the 2009 Musicalia--an invitational music gathering in White Hall, VA. . I love this tune and I really enjoyed playing it with Adam and Beth.

I learned this terrific tune from Bruce Greene--but I don't remember who his source was. Here I'm playing it on a very windy 4th of July weekend at the Sassafras in Cecilton MD with Rafe Stefanini (fiddle) and Nikki Lee (guitar). Rick Martin was also fiddling in that session, but not on this tune (nor on The Rebel's Raid, which I also posted here). It's not a particularly tidy rendition on any of our parts, but I like it anyway.

This interesting song was recorded back in the day by the Sweet Brothers of Virginia. At the Clifftop Trad Band Finals in 2005, my band (Troublesome Creek) was preceded by a group called Old Missouri with Rhys Jones and Christina Wheeler fiddling. They played this song and we liked it so much that we recorded it on our County CD (Fast As Time Can Take Me). I was happy to get to play (and record) this peppy rendition with Rhys on January 10 at his house in Warrenton, VA. Fiddle and vocal--Rhys Jones Clawhammer banjo-Steve Arkin Guitar and vocal-Jason Ashby

Originally recorded by Freeny's Barn Dance Band. This rendition was recorded at Rhys Jones' house in Warrenton, VA on January 10th. I thought we were pretty amazingly "locked in" on this tune--affording me the opportunity to gamble on a variety of approaches to playing the high part. Moonlight is a Kentucky tune. I don't know the source, but I believe it was collected by Bruce Greene. I've heard that the source recording was in the key of D, but everyone I know who plays it (and there aren't many) plays it in A. I recorded this in a jam with Palmer and Greg Loux at their home in PA this last Saturday (5/15/10). Palmer Loux-fiddle; Steve Arkin-3-finger banjo, Greg Loux-guitar. There's a cell phone ring at the end--the Louxes son was calling them.

Friday night jam at Lake Genero 2010. The tune is from Buddy Thomas. Playing are Palmer Loux and Bill Christophersen on fiddle; me on 3-finger banjo; and Greg Loux on guitar. This was recorded at a very low level and I posted it in that form in BH--here is an audible version.

Notey little tune from JW Day (not to be confused with the Ed Haley and Clyde Davenport versions). This was recorded at a rehearsal of Lightning in the East (John Hoffmann-fiddle; Steve Arkin-Banjo, Erica Weiss-guitar. Pardon the early chat and false start--my editing software is proving unequal to the task.

Nice 3-part C tune from Bob Walter; there's also a version from Casey Jones (the fiddler; not the engineer). Pardon the recording quality, but I like the drive of John Hoffmann's fiddle--a challenge to match him on banjo. This performance by Lightning in the East was recorded at the 2007 Park Slope Jamboree. John Hoffmann-fiddle; Steve Arkin-banjo; Erica Weiss-guitar.

Two great Illinois tunes strung together in a medley for a dance at Rockbridge in Buena Vista VA. Both tunes were collected by Gary Harrison and further disseminated by Chirps Smith. I especially like Beverly Smith's calling. The band is Troublesome Creek: Rick Martin on fiddle Steve Arkin on clawhammer banjo Dick Harrington on guitar Lorie Lichtenwalner on bass

Another Round Peak tune from the session at Mount Airy 2012--I'm on banjo; the excellent fiddler and guitar player must remain anonymous until I catch up with them and get clearance to disclose their identities.

Jam at Clifftop 2011 with Roger Netherton on fiddle, Steve Arkin on banjo, Jim Childress on guitar. Dan Rublee joins in on bass halfway through. Roger was 14 at the time--and hot as a pistol!

This is a great tune from Benton Flippen. It was recorded in 2002. The lineup is: Steve Arkin-clawhammer banjo; Palmer Loux-fiddle; Greg Loux-guitar. Every now and again some 3-finger-style licks creep into my clawhammer playing--although I try to resist the temptation. This was just such an occasion.
