Another recording from last Thursday (Jine 27 2013) Live in Hillbilly Heaven at the Gollan Hotel in Lismore. Featuring Matt Elliott on washboard & percussion. This recording documents a number of firsts: it was the first time Matt had ever backed my banjo playing (literally, because we didn't get a chance to rehearse); it was the first time I ever played Cumberland Gap on banjo at a gig; and it was the first time Matt & I ever played the song together. Considering all that I think it came off ok.

I learned this song from the singing of Bascom Lamar Lunsford. This recording is an outtake from my new album 'Attic Songs' which will be released in 2013. I left this off because the album includes another tune derived from Lunsford ('The Derby Ram') & I like having something extra to give away. Played on my Clifford Essex C. E. Special (made in England early 1900s).

This is me with my new band, Julian Smith on the double bass & Leroy Steven on drums. I'm calling them the Blue Revellers, but we're not sure if that's the name to stick with. We've got our first gig on Friday night at the local hall in nearby Bentley: http://www.echo.net.au/2014/02/battle-bentley/ This recording is from our first rehearsal jam together last sunday. As well as banjo stuff we are rehearsing songs with me on electric guitar. I'm pretty excited about how this is all going to turn out.

This is a live recording from last Thursday (June 27 2013) of me playing The Cuckoo Bird accompanied by Matt Elliott on the washboard and drums (simultaneously). While I have been playing with Matt for a number of years (he usually plays drums accompanying my electric guitar), this is the first time he has ever backed me while I'm playing banjo. For a number of reasons we were both too busy to get together for a rehearsal, so this is it, finding out how it's going to sound live on stage in front of an audience. Pretty bloody exciting. I owe a lot to Matt, I wouldn't even be playing banjo if it wasn't for him, because it was him lending me a banjo last year that got me started. In fact I finally returned his long-loaned banjo to him at this gig as I now have three of my own!
