New old-time banjo album 'Attic Songs' now available

Saturday, November 23, 2013

Hi there folks,

I'm pleased to announce that my new album 'Attic Songs' is now available from CD Baby and iTunes.

It is available as a lossless download from CD Baby, and is also available from there as a physical CD.

I'm very proud of the album. It consists of 12 traditional tunes and two originals, all performed solo on 5-string banjo with vocals. I play on all tracks my beautiful 100 year-old Clifford Essex C. E. Special.

Why Attic? Well, as well as meaning 'loft' it also describes a section of the upper tymapnic cavity of the ear; and when capitalised 'Attic' means pertaining to Attica, the area of ancient Greece which included Athens in the classical period. From that we get the sense of the word 'attic' meaning "displaying simple elegance, incisive intelligence, and delicate wit". So there you have it.

New in 2015: you can now listen to the full album on YouTube, complete with lyrics printed on screen. Enjoy!

Taught to play guitar in folk tradition at age 9 by an Irish Catholic nun in Dubbo NSW. Got into songwriting, released solo album 'Listener' in 2005. Played with numerous bands in the Northern Rivers area of NSW. Picked up the banjo early in 2012 when a friend lent me one while he went to India in 2012. I have rarely put the banjo down since; I ended up buying one of my own, a beautiful old open back Clifford Essex 'C. E. Special', made in England in the early 1900s. Recorded a solo album on the banjo 'Attic Songs' in late 2012, soon to be released. Since then I have obtained two more beautiful open backs, each with their own character & qualities. A locally made A. T. Clarke and a unique number from Deep Creek Springs, signed by the maker Jeff Duffield as well as by Frank Lee of the Freight Hoppers.
