My 4yo daughter has one of those electric mini pianos. I wanted to impress her a bit with my playing and also to practice some transcription skills and thus decided to arrange her favourite preset tune for banjo. It seemed perfect for some melodic banjo as it clearly seemed to be a fiddle melody. It also seemed so familiar but I didn't know the name. I asked a colleague who is a first violinist for a symphony orchestra and he thought it was a Scottish dance but didn't know the name either. Try googling a melody... Anyway, I eventually found out that the tune was called "Sailor's Hornpipe" or "The College Hornpipe" and in fact is a very popular fiddle tune. I guess I should feel stupid for not knowing... I made this arrangement some time in August and wanted to make this recording and arrangement a little project for my first banjo anniversary as I got my banjo on August 26, 2010. Unfortunately I didn't find the time to record it so I'm uploading this now two months late. The good thing about it is that I have had a lot of time to practice this tune so I'm quite content with the recording. I only had to play it a few times until I was mostly happy with the cut. The tablature to the recording is in my tab section.

We played this live during the Lion's Jam Hootenanny, an annual concert of scratch bands formed by the members of the Lion's Jam in Braunschweig, Germany. One half of our scratch band are locals from the Braunschweig jam session, the other half come from the Berlin area. Some people from Braunschweig show up regularly at our jam and vice versa which is why we formed this scratch band to celebrate our friendship. We named the scratch band "The A2 Riders" because of the Autobahn #2 that connects both cities. On the recording I play banjo and sing which is a very rare thing for me to do.

This is my recording of me playing Jerusalem Ridge including the backing track I practice this song with. The recording was made with a Zoom H5 situated about a meter away from the banjo using the X/Y mike the Zoom comes with. Using audacity, I normalised the volume, added some compression and a little reverb (in this order). I think there is too much pick noise and I suspect something is wrong with the compression setup. The backing track seems to mask some of the deficiencies in my playing.

I first heard this lovely tune a few weeks ago in a jam session and it showed up twice in other sessions. Hence, it was time I learned this tune. I set up a backing track and played with it until I was happy with my arrangement.

Our last jam session took place on the terrace of the restaurant where we usually play. A tuba player passed by on his bicycle, stopped to listen and was invited into the session. This is the first tune we played together.
