I used a backing track made by BHO member Beckyboy for this... I think he used Band in a Box to make it. I played two breaks, then did some down the neck backup where a fiddle break might go. Then another break to finish it up.

First of all, I used the backing track put together by BHO member Jan Erik Stokke aka "erstokke", from Norway. Jan Erik provided the guitar, mando, and bass via his backing track, and I put the banjo on top of that. I thought of this as a long distance jam... one guy in Norway and one in North Carolina, and with that in mind I decided to record my part in one take, warts and all. I made a LOT of mistakes, but I kind of liked the bouncy feel. Thanks Jan Erik!
Update (2013): It turns out that I hate the bouncy feel. Hate! I have worked hard to get rid of it... maybe one day soon I will post a new version.

I got inspired after seeing Ralph Stanley for the first time, so I bought Steve Sparkman's instructional video and learned this tune. It has always been one of my favorites. I am playing both the banjo and the guitar.

This is my five seconds of fame (or something) on a small radio station in Roanoke Rapids, NC ,with my old band Yesterday's Pickles. The band is now defunct, but we had fun while it lasted.
Flower for a Yankee Soldier is a true song that I wrote about my grandmother who cared for the grave of an unknown Civil War soldier. The grave is located on the old family homeplace near Edneyville, NC. My grandma (born in 1886) looked after the grave ever since she was a little girl, even though people told her that they wouldn't do it because he was an enemy soldier. She said that he was somebody's son first.

What do you get if you take the great Foggy Mountain Banjo track and drag it behind a jeep for a week? Something like this. Recorded Nov, 2006.
Update: I recorded this before I listened to the Carter Family version of the tune. Now that I understand the song a little better, I try not to stray as far from the melody. See my blog for more about the Carter version and why I think it is important.

This is Raymond Surratt and his Pine Ridge Buddies, an obscure group of first generation pickers from the Albemarle NC area. Buck Carpenter plays banjo.

This is the first thing I recorded on my new banjo... a 1926 TB1 conversion by Arthur Hatfield. This thing has got a real gutsy low end that doesn't quite come through on the recording. Oh well... this recording is the best I can do with what I have.
The middle part is supposed to be backup, not a high break. I read something recently that the late Al Osteen said: "always practice the whole song including the backup". So that's what I try to do now.

I heard Paul Simon sing the Sound of Silence at the 9/11 10th anniversary memorial, and I could not get it out of my head. I had to try to play it.
