Probably the most modern song in my repertoire. My nieces love it. Banjo is in standard C tuning (gCGBD), down to an A chord.

This song is fairly new to me. From Roy Acuff. On Acuff's original 78 of this it is credited to the Louvin Brothers. He does it at a much slower pace on the record than he later would in live performances.

This style of clawhammer I really only use on stage. Very little melody is played except in the break. I got this song from my dad, who got it from my grandma, who probably got it from the Osborne Brothers.

The first song I ever learned to play in this style. Banjo is tuned f#DGAD. This is part of a whole family of songs that includes Jimmie Rogers' Waiting for a Train.

Up-picking ("Seeger style). This song was recorded by many groups during the Urban Folk Revival. My sources are the Dubliners and the Pogues. Billy Faier does a good version. A couple mistakes in here, as this style is relatively new to me.

An old church song from the playing of Elizabeth Cotten. I try to stay fairly close to her simple up-picking style, though, being left-handed, she did not use the thumb string. I made some noise when turning off the recording.

Roscoe Holcomb's version. Two-finger thumb lead. The tuning is fDGCB, but I played this on the long-neck capoed at the first fret, so it's really d#CFA#C.

Sad song. From Cousin Emmy, Roscoe Holcomb, and Frank Proffitt. G tuning, two-finger thumb lead. Rose Maddox recorded a lighthearted version.

From Pete Seeger. More of a fragment than a song. Child Ballad 74. Jean Ritchie sings a more complete version of the story. Sawmill tuning, down from G to F. Two-finger index-lead. Still learning this style.

This song was the first commercial record of the rural folk music that came to be known as hillbilly and, eventually, country music ever made, by Fiddlin' John Carson. Played here on my Gold Tone 250WL-LN. One condenser mic to catch the vocals and the banjo.

Just foolin' around with some blues on the banjo. It's kinda hard to figure out how to fit the 5th string in. Consider this a work in progress.
