Turlough O’Carolan. Another of Carolan’s patrons was Baptist Johnston of Tully, County Monaghan. He was High Sheriff of that county in 1728. He also was a Member of Parliament for the Borough of Monaghan from 1747 to 1753. This lively tune was learned from the playing of Tom Hall, who shares some of the responsibility for our formation as a band. Little is known of this piece except for the fact it was composed for Captain O’Kane or O’Cahan of Antrim, a sportsman, well known in his time as “Slasher” O’Kane. Turlough O’Carolan was of a high spirited and gregarious nature. He enjoyed food and drink in generous abundance. However, he could be irascible and cantankerous when denied. He showered his displeasure upon one Bridget Waldron, an extremely stingy landlady, who proved reluctant to provide fair portions. Carolan wrote a disparaging poem to her at her gravesite and composed this piece of music to go with it. Our arrangement emphasizes the distinct influence of the Italian Baroque style on Carolan’s work. Traditional. There is some controversy concerning this composition. We have sometimes heard it attributed to Turlough O’Carolan and it is hauntingly reminiscent of his melodic style. However in 1798, Edward Bunting, the foremost chronicler of Irish traditional music of his time, opined that this tune was of ancient origin and unknown authorship. Eleanor Plunkett of Castlecome was the last of her family and, one might safely assume, was as beautiful as the tune O Carolan made for her. For this recording, the Angel Band has joined her tune with the spirited anthem of liberty, The Rights of Man. Ruari Dall O Cathain was born in Derry nearly a hundred years before O Carolan. Also known as Blind Roger O’Keane, this wealthy and brilliant harpist later moved to Scotland where he traveled about the country with a full retinue of servants. But one day he chanced alone at the home of one Lady Eglinton who, mistaking him for an itinerant musician, demanded a tune, whereupon Ruari Dall stalked off in high dudgeon. This tune, Give Me Your Hand, is the culmination of the reconciliation. Listen carefully and you can hear the words in the tune, “Come give me your hand, come give me your hand...”. Composed by Ireland's National Composer, Turlough O'Carolan (1670 - 1738), performed by the Angel Band. Grace Nugent was the fifth and youngest daughter of James Nugent of Castle Nugent, Coolamber, County Westmeath. Carolan composed this piece, along with four others, to honor members of the Nugent family. These extremely generous patrons lavishly supported Carolan as he stayed with them at Castle Nugent during the years 1720 and 1721. Another of O Carolan’s patrons was Kean O Hara of Nymphsfield, Co. Sligo, who was born about 1657. He died in 1719, predeceasing O Carolan by some eleven years. The Kilnamona Barn Dance/Father Kelly’s No. 1–Traditional. On our last trip to Ireland, while we were touring around County Clare, we spied a sign at a turnoff road in a very rural area—Kilnamona 1 km. We were working on this music at the time and directly proceeded to Kilnamona, which consisted of a small country crossroads with only an elementary school and yes, on the opposite side, a little way down, there it was. The Barn! We chose Father Kelly’s No. 1, a lively reel, to medley with the barn dance. The contrast between the two, highlights the many dimensions of Irish traditional dance music. Contrary to popular opinion, Faeries are not cute little winged creatures. Rather they are an ancient race, possessed of magical powers. Small in stature, in times past they lived deep within barrows (large earth mounds) and were wont to keep to themselves. Of this tune, The King of the Faeries, it is rumored that the King himself will appear during the third time through. Lady Wrixon is another benefactress, but of uncertain time and place. There were no landed Wrixons outside of County Cork, a region visited by O Carolan before 1720. Possibly she was the wife of Benjamin Wrixon, Esq., of Ballygibblin. But no matter, it’s still a wonderful tune. We had a great time learning and then arranging this music. The composition exemplifies the strong influence of the Italian Baroque composers so popular with Carolan’s patrons at the time. Loftus Jones of Ardnaglass, County Sligo, was married in 1740, two years subsequent to the passing of Carolan, which leads us to believe that Carolan composed this piece near the end of his career. The name is recent, and probably from contra dance tradition somewhere along the line.
