Not sure which version of the band this is. Still 80s, though. Whoever it is, the tune should've been faster.

Takoma Valley Band, April 1980. Think this was from the Manassas album.

In honor of Bob Dylan receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature, here's a mid-1980s recording of my bluegrass band Nothin' Hokey (or Takoma Valley Band) performing his song "It Ain't Me, Babe." Recorded at a practice in a live take captured by the built-in condenser mic of a cassette recorder.

1970s pop music from the second generation of my 1980s bluegrass band: Nothin' Hokey. Our version of Mike Nesmith's "Joanne." Banjo muted with plastic clothespins clamping the bridge.

Takoma Valley Band, April 1980. One of my all-time favorite Dillards songs, from their Wheatstraw Suite album. I played this in two different bands. Never heard anyone else cover it.

Another January 1985 live recording of Takoma Valley Band/Nothin' Hokey. Even though the song had by this time been covered by bluegrass artists, including Keith Whitley in 1982, we learned the song from its original version on Jonathan Edwards's 1977 album, "Sailboat." It had been part of our repertoire almost from our start in 1980. As with The Tracker, this is probably a direct line out to tape from the PA head. Same mix that went to the speakers.

Live recording from January 1985 of my band performing our cover of The Tracker, a John Hadley song recorded by Country Gazette on their album "All This And Money, Too." The Gazette version changes key for the musical outro. We couldn't pull that off. I believe this recording is a direct output to tape from the PA head. For about 6 months we had a weekly Thursday night gig at the restaurant/bar attached to the Quality Inn in Bowie, Maryland. It was some time during this run that we changed our name from Takoma Valley Band to Nothin' Hokey. Why, I'll never know.

The Takoma Valley band, April 1980. Recorded direct to cassette in my living room as we practiced for an open mike showcase at the old (original) Birchmere. Ken Norkin (Old Hickory) on banjo; Jim Thomas, guitar; Frank Powers, mandolin; Kevin Brooks, bass. Kevin has gone on to Maryland musical fame as one of Them Eastport Oyster Boys.

Nothin' Hokey, ca. 1985. Usually a set- or concert-ender for us. I miss the melody note in my break a couple times. Sorry.

Takoma Valley Band, live, at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, May 6, 1980. This was our first public performance. As the featured band at an open mic showcase, we played two sets that night. This was our encore. Tape ran out, so I faded the ending for the mp3.
