This is my first try at recording on my newly-converted fretless banjo. The nylon strings are still settling down, so the tuning's a little unstable. Angeline the Baker is one of my favourite double C pieces. If I'm playing alone (as here) I don't usually bother to capo or tune up to D.

This is a tune I learned from a Mike Seeger banjo DVD. I play it in a 3-finger up-picking style in f#DF#AD tuning. Here it's played on my fretless banjo.

A Welsh tune played here by me on fiddle and banjo - the latter tuned to double C, capo 2 (tune is in D).

The first of these two tunes is an American one that I learned first from the Fiddler's Fakebook. The second is a traditional Welsh tune, which seems to fit very well with the other. I play them both in open G tuning. Usually I'd play them through lots of times each, but I stuck to twice through for the sake of the recording.

This is the result of me mucking around with multitrack recording on my computer. I decided to record the banjo and vocals separately so I could balance them properly. After laying down the banjo track in G I decided to push the key up to A so I could add some fiddle as well; rather than rerecord the banjo I raised the pitch digitally. The vocal took 3 takes because I kept fluffing lines. At one point I did an extra repeat on one of the instrumental verses, but decided to leave it in.

Here's a little tune I wrote myself. I hope I haven't inadvertently ripped off an existing tune. It's played in double C tuning and is called Rainy Day in May purely because it was raining when it was written (1st May 2009).

I'm not sure where this folksong hails from but it's an amusing, if somewhat implausible, story. I accompany myself on a banjo tuned in open C (gCGCE) using a 2-and-a-half finger index lead style (i.e. I occasionally throw in a bit of middle finger work).
