From The Cliffhangers "On The Edge" album notes: Tunings: fiddle - ADAE, banjo - aDADE Sources: Luther Strong, Dalesburg, Kentucky; James William "J.W." Day, Catlettsburg, Kentucky Many of the tunes we play are drawn from the repertoire of great solo fiddlers, such as J.W. Day, who performed as Jilson Setters, the "Singing Fiddler of Lost Hope Hollow." Here we blend two versions of a classic tune, journeying from Strong’s setting to Day’s and back again (catching a brief glimpse of J.W. Twilight along the way). The players are Mark Simos, fiddle; Brendan Doyle, banjo; Jody Platt, tenor guitar; Rusty Neithammer, guitar; Karen Falkowski, bass. Recorded in October 2005 in West Chester, PA by Tim Brown.

From the CD "On The Edge" by the Cliffhangers. Fiddle: Mark Simos; banjo: Brendan Doyle; guitar: Rusty Neithammer; tenor guitar: Jody Platt; bass: Karen Falkowski. Fiddle tuning: FCFC, banjo tuning: FBbFBbC Sources: Hiram Stamper, Hindman, Knott County, Kentucky; and his son Art Stamper. Mark's notes: "I first heard Art play this tune late one foggy night at Clifftop — standing in a muddy clearing amidst a gathered crowd, hat slouched on his head, cross-tuned fiddle sailing the glorious fat low notes out into the dark trees. Though our version here is closer to his dad Hiram’s, we dedicate this tune to Art’s memory."

From a session at Clifftop, Tuesday, 7/29/13. Adam Hurt - fiddle, Beth Hartness - guitar, Brendan Doyle - banjo Recorded by Adam and Beth's friend Paul DeBlois. This was a really fun session, and one which I'd like to make at least a yearly habit! Adam and Beth are both lovely people as well as being fabulous musicians, and I can't get enough of playing with them. Being a festival recording, this has the typical festival background noise of other sessions, hollered conversations, etc., but despite that, it came out pretty good, I think. I hope you enjoy it!

This tune is from West Virginia fiddler Andrew Burnside; I learned it years ago as just "Coal Holler", without knowing the source, and since there are at least two unrelated tunes named "Hell Up Coal Holler", I'm not sure of the correct name for this particular tune. From a late night Clifftop 2016 session with Rhys Jones and Tashina Clarridge, fiddles; Brendan Doyle, banjo; Erica Weiss, guitar; Simon Chrisman, bass. Recorded by Keith Stubbs.

A tune from West Virginia fiddler Burl Hammons. From a late night Clifftop 2016 session with Rhys Jones and Tashina Clarridge, fiddles; Brendan Doyle, banjo; Erica Weiss, guitar; Simon Chrisman, bass. Recorded by Keith Stubbs. The recording starts out with a slow preview of the A part, followed by a few comments about the tune, before launching into the tune itself - typical of live festival session recordings!

The Cliffhangers (me on banjo) warming up for the Clifftop trad. band contest 2004. The tune is from Ed Haley, filtered through the brain and fingers of Mark Simos (fiddle). Sorry about the funky compressed sound from someone's MiniDisc recorder; the limiter 'pumps' with the banjo's dynamics.
