Pete Seeger was my original inspiration to take up the banjo. At that time (1961) his book was about the only one available, and it was my only real instructor. I have to say I was a slow learner, but like anyone who gets hooked on the banjo, I stuck at it and eventually found my voice. I say voice, because like Seeger, I see the banjo as primarily a rhythm instrument for vocal expression. Over the years my playing has evolved into a somewhat unique direction that I call expert primitive banjo. Primarily a frailing style (though the older term rapping the banjo is more appropriate to what I do) but with mix of finger picking and complicated strumming more like a plectrum. I never use either picks or capos and have a chordal approach to the music. I have resolutely an amateur player, in the sense that I play for the love of the playing, singing and the community of musicians. I have always resisted commercialization of the music, for many reasons, not the least of which is the terrible consequences I have seen affect others who have tried to follow that path. Keep the music free.
