Don is a 5th generation music maker (most mountain music instruments except the fiddle) from the Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley playing and singing “mountain music” on stage in his father’s band at the age of 8. He has a Ph.D. in American music and popular culture and is currently a visiting sociology professor at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater Virginia. His wife, Martha Hills is a native Mainer and has over 10 years experience in pre k-3 educational. Musically, she has developed and presented a series of parent/child workshops focusing on music making with children in mind. Martha and Don (a.k.a. “Me & Martha”) conduct slow-jam workshops, lectures on a variety of subject areas, perform at concerts and festivals, conduct fund-raising events, sponsor formal and informal jams, author topical books and papers, and promote music making as a way of life, creating community and connecting bridges.
