Album Review: Bill Burke and Fred Coon - Black Bear on the Mountain

Monday, December 9, 2013

Click for Large VersionThis is a great CD, made out of love for the music, the deep bonds of friendship and a couple of lifetime's worth of songs and stories.

This CD isn't trying to reinvent the armchair, just build and shape with function and form. My father in law would listen to this and say, 'That's really nice work', the same as he would compliment a solid piece of woodwork.

Bill Burke and Fred Coon's "Black Bear on the Mountain" grows on you. Pick it up and keep listening to it. What you'll find as you go deeper with the music is that it's not trying to crowd you with notes or hit you over the head with music played to impress. It's really a record that (I think) reflects what you learn after you play music your whole life -- that sometimes it's what you leave out instead of what you put in. That every song has a certain tempo that'll tell the story the way it's meant to be told that will allow you to connect with listener and accompanist alike. Slow your roll and enjoy the ride.

There's some sublime picking on this disc, and a nice mix of tunes. Highlights for me are Bill's solo mandolin on 'Kitchen Girl' and 'Cold Frosty Mornin', Fred's clawhammer tune 'The Loaded Lion' and both the fellas playing a nice duet on the perennial favorite 'June Apple'.

Really nice record, very enjoyable music. Recommended.

I play and teach guitar professionally in Portland, Oregon. I picked up an old Buckbee nylon string pony banjo (or maybe a it's a banjeurine?) off of CL a few years ago, and found that I really enjoyed playing it. I then had Brooks Masten build me one of his great banjos this last Summer, and now spend a few hours a day messing around on it. It's a great outlet for me musically, and I'm looking forward to learning tunes and playing with folks.
