My new banjo

Sunday, March 1, 2009

Yesterday I travelled to Brattleboro, Vt. to visit Will Fielding and shop for a banjo. He had three banjos made, set up, and ready. I sat and played them. Then he played them. Then I played them realizing he played them much better than I. I selected the Rooster model. It has a maple pot and neck with an ironwood fingerboard. It has an 11" head with a brass tone ring. It is beautiful It is set up great. Last night I had a jam at my house (mostly bluegrass). I played the rooster on about 10 fiddle tunes. I really like it and would recommend it highly. It plays a lot differently than the goodtime so I really need to work with it more. It was my birthday present to me. 2 comments

I started playing banjo as a freshman in college. I would jam a little but was uncomfortable. I went on as a closet picker for almost 30 yrs. 3 yrs ago I attended Peter Wernick's jam camp and that changed my life. Now that I'm comfortable in a jam situation I spend a lot more time playing and practicing. I just started trying clawhammer in 2008 and take lessons from banjofrailer. Now my goal is to get good enough at clawhammer to play in an old time jam.
