Five-string Beelzebubba

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

I was taking photos of Rebekah Weiler as she lead an introduction to banjo workshop at Uncle Dave Macon Days. Once she started, there was one banjo left on the table at the front of the room.

It bit me.

Four days later, I was writing a check for my first banjo.

A week or so later, I wrote this "dumb-ditty" to send a warning to others.

Sing it to the tune of Angeline the Baker or Old Joe Clark or, well, just about any of them.

Five-string Beelzebubba

(C) Ed Gregory, BMI

If you've never played the banjo

Don't touch those demon strings

Don't try to pluck a single tune

Don't you let that five-string ring

The banjo is addicting

Avoid it if you're wise

Or you'll find that you just can't put down

This devil in disguise

 CHORUS:

You'll drink your coffee lukewarm

You'll eat your supper cold

'Cause once that banjo's in your hands

It's hard to break it's hold

Oh come into my parlor

Says the spider to the fly

And keep on playing banjo

Says the demon on my thigh

Now I'm pretty near exhausted

I'd like to take a nap

“Let's play some in another key.”

Says the demon on my lap.

 CHORUS:

You'll drink your coffee lukewarm

You'll eat your supper cold

'Cause once that banjo's in your hands

It's hard to break it's hold

Got into old-time string band music at age 53, started with extremely basic rhythm guitar, then mando, then fiddle, then back to guitar for a move toward flat-picking, and now clawhammer. One of the greatest guitar pickers in the country calls me "bluegrass friendly", but not-yet bluegrass - but I love to sing old bluegrass classics and harmonize. I'm the Webmaster for the Nashville Old-Time String Band Association (NOTSBA) at http://www.nashvilleoldtime.org I'm also the Web host for NashCamp, http://www.nashcamp.com, which is Cindy Sinclair's great package of bluegrass camps dedicated to putting players together with bluegrass heroes.
