First guitar age 9 playing skiffle, first banjo 11th birthday (Windsor G Zither), started playing jazz in Scouts, went on joining various semi-pro bands, switched to tenor banjo about age 16 (better in jazz band), went pro in 1969 with Shep's Banjo Boys (4 years), band split and carried on as The Banjo Boys eventually ended up as duo Bernie & Chas. Returned to day job after 9 years as pro and joined local jazz band. Still playing with Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz. Played in USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Germany, Holland, cruises, UK festivals. Have problems with arthritus in hands and had two operations in last two years. Still managing to play. Played at Vancouver BC Dixie Fest again in September 2008. Just had to retire due to work load and hand problems.
