I've been an amateur fiddle player since 1995 and I took up the 5 string banjo in 2004. I like playing Old Time Appalachian music plus tunes from the Arcadian (French Canadian), Irish and Scottish traditions, (although I like listening to all sorts of other stuff too). I play more mainstream traditional fiddle tunes in a barn dance band, along with an accordionist and a guitarist. I'm also involved in a couple of song-based projects with other musicians where I get the chance to play banjo and mandolin as well. I try to play clawhammer style but I have a tendency to up-pick some notes (although I manage to use downstroke brushes to get the clucky sound). With 4 children and a 'day job', my time to play and learn is fairly limited at the moment but I'm hoping the kids will grow up to be players too!
