Born in Texas. At College in Calif. met old time banjoist Steve Keith.Ralph Stanley came to play at UCSB. and I was inspired by his clawhammer style. Ralph told Steve and me to head to the Southern Mts. It was 1969 and we found a world of great old banjo players from Bascomb Lunsford to Tommy Jarrell. After college move to Asheville, NC to learn old time musc. Have been collecting and peforming professionally for 35 years now. Perform solo, with Doc Watson, and with my band; David Holt and the Lightning Bolts.
