Pete Seeger's Vega banjo

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

I just bought Pete's Vega banjo on reverb. It was given to Pete by Vega but he said it was too small for his hands so he gave it to Bernie Kraus (The Weavers)  and Bernie quit playing. He put in in the case and apparently just decided to sell it. I do not even have it yet but I could not believe that it stayed for  sale for a year! It was a music store in Pete's hometown of Beacon New York. Maybe it was the price (originally $9k reduced to $6,900).  The banjo is a long neck on a Tubaphone pot. It has 28 brackets but does not have the old bracket band, the bolts go through the rim. It appears to be untouched.  I am a new member and a hack when it comes to playing but I love the banjo. I got my first Tubaphone in '75 and have acquired Vegas since then. I just could not believe my luck. Know it is in good hands. If anyone wants to see it I'll post pics when I get it. Pete's personal instrument, the one with the writing on the head, is probably with the Estate and should go in the Smithsonian. This, to me, was a collectors treasure of a lifetime.

definitely not a professional musician but recent exposure to Steve Earle's music got me to finally play in front of other people. Before that I would only do a few chords, now I sing. I did mostly rock but my first instrument was the 5 string inspired by Steve Wade. Recently I picked up the banjo again.
