Quick Life Updates

Friday, February 7, 2014

Hey everyone,

It's been a really long time since I have posted on here, so I thought I would fill you all in on some of my new happenings. For starters I made the move to leave Audie & Redline at the end of last year. The timing was right and I needed to move on in my music career. I will be filling in throughout out the year with a few bands including the Kenny & Amanda Smith Band!   ( if any BHO members live around Ohio - Pennsylvania, we will be playing at the Pennyroyal Opera House in Fairview Oh on March 28th & Seven Mountains Concert Series in York Pa on March 29th )

Also I have started a new website ( ) dedicated to my music & to help grow my photography business. I'm also really starting to grow my 81crowe Youtube channel, focusing mainly on bluegrass / oldtime banjo videos, lessons, tips & advice. In addition I have almost wrapped up my second Cd  "Avenue Of The Giants"  that will be out early this year. It features the all star talents of Audie Blaylock, Patrick McAvinue, Jesse Brock, Jason Moore, Kenny Smith, Darrell Webb & Eddie Rose. I'm really excited about and I will make a post on here as soon as it's out!

Finally I really wanted to thank everyone that sent dad messages while I was in the hospital with infection. My arm is really healing up nicely and the doctors think I should be completely recovered in a few weeks.

I hope this note finds you all doing well & happy picking!

Occupation: Banjo player for Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder

Gender: Male
Age: 30

My Instruments:
I use two road axes when I'm out with Kentucky Thunder. One is a 98% original 1981 Gold Star J.D Crowe model. It's banjo # 5 from the first batch of 80 J.D's produced. I got it from Chris Warner last year; he was the original owner (and he played it with Jimmy Martin a little bit!). Chris put a different head on it early on & I changed the bridge...other than that it's all 81 Gold Star parts. The other banjo I use is a 1978 Gold Star GF - 100W. It is a 100% original GS that could be a clone to Tom Adams'. This is another Warner String Works banjo from Hanover, PA. I also play a banjo my father built for me when I was 13; it is built mostly with Prucha parts (including the tone ring).

Favorite Bands/Musicians:
Earl Scruggs, Tom Adams, Jim Mills, Chris Warner, Ned Luberecki, Ron Stuart, Reed Martin, Nev Jackson, Patrick McAvinue, Stuart Duncan, Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, Cody Kilby, Sam Bush and many many more

I grew up in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and came by my passion for bluegrass and the banjo, in particular, honestly. My father, Glenn, made handcrafted banjos along with playing the fiddle and Clawhammer banjo since the early 1970's. As a result of the never ending string of live music while growing up, I started taking banjo lessons at age 10. I was a previous bluegrass band member with Gold Heart and Audie Blaylock & Redline. During that time period, I was able to work with and learn from industry legends such as Del & Ronnie McCoury, Bobby Osborne, Carl Jackson, Glen Duncan, Lou Reid and many more.
