fairbanks whyte layde no 7 1905

From neillconnor on 2/25/2011 9:52:06 AM

I`ve just done  a fairbanks N07 up and put light guage strings on it. It sounds nice but i think it would sound even better with medium strings (10, 13, 16, 24, 10).  The neck has no truss rod, and as it was designed for lower tension gut strings, would a set of mediums be too much for the neck?

Why don't you put Nylguts on her? I played my 1910 fairbanks with light steel strings for about 30 years before putting on Nylguts this past summer. It plays and sounds much better to me, now...especially the intonation up the neck. It's how it was designed to be set up, and unsurprisingly, it works better that way! (There are 2 videos of me playing it linked to this page...the older one - "Photos of the Family" - is with steel, the newer one - "Clawhammer Bach" - is with Nylgut, so you can get some idea for yourself which sounds better.)

Congratulations Connor, I know you have had this for instrument for four months now, but I'll bet the honeymoon is far from over. ;-)
