ive just bought a fairbanks no 7 which is in good playable condition but cosmetically it needs a make over. Someone at some time has applied a thick polyurothane varnish to the neck which has covered the original wood including the carved heel and peghead. I want to remove this and bring it back to its former glory but am unsure as to whether varnish or paint remover would be suitable.
Any advice welcome please.

You will get a lot more advice there than here, I would think. You might want to directly contact Dan Knowles (BHO member, and builder / restorer par excellence) with a pm through his page. He'll know the answer for sure.
