From jacktraylor on 7/27/2011 11:09:12 AM

There is currently a banjo listed on E-bay that is listed as a Whyte Laydie, Rather than comment, I am seeking your comments

Vintage 1928 Vega Whyte Laydie #2 20 Fret Banjo Custom

Please take a look at  it and comment on its general appearance and probable provenance.I am curious.

Thanks

Looks like a right frankenstien. The dowel stick is from a why're layde neck, but not the 60's neck that's on it now. The dowel stick has same nos as pot so either it's a fake stick or someone's taken the why're layde towering out and replaced it with a tuber phone ring. Defiantly not worth half of the opening price

The doesn't look like a real tubaphone tone ring to me. The holes should be bigger and closer together.

Now another question. A Fairbanks Whyte Laydie Banjorine appears and is represented as being "original" yet has serial numbers on pot and dowel that are 10 years, more or less, apart. Did the pot sit aging, waiting for the dowel and neck?
If the dowel and pot are not mated what of the neck? Someone has bid $1200 on this item. What am I missing?

I bid £10 on this banjo as I wanted the Fairbanks plate off the dowel stick!
Seems a strange banjo , unmatched serial nos and an 11 inch pot on a banjerine, I thought most were 10 and 1/8th pots

Neill,
There is a Fairbanks tenor on Ebay right now that has the metal plate which was of interest to you. It's peg head is broken so there may be a deal available for you.

I have to correct myself and apologize to my fellows for a mistake in my earlier post. The Banjorine listed on Ebay, upon further inspection, has matching serial numbers. The one on the dowel appears to start with a 3 but upon closer examination, starts with a 2.I am having a small bowel ofcrow for breakfast.

Sorry,
Jack
