Pronunciation?

From drmarx999 on 4/29/2017 6:39:43 PM

Pete Seeger and Eddie Peabody said Vee-ga; everyone I know says Vay-ga.  Which is correct?

Ah yes– the question of pronunciation. About two years ago, in May 2015, I asked the same question on this discussion group and got many comments. I don't know how to put a link to that thread, but if you search "Vega pronunciation", you'll come across it. I decided I was going to continue to say "Vay-guh".

In Oxford dictionary online I found two pronounciations: vega 1, (vaygah)--a grassy plain, and Vega 2, (veega)-- The star Vega is the fifth brightest star in the sky. So take your pick, or pick your Vega.

One of my banjo buddies from Maine who visited the Boston factory as a youngster told me a few years ago that the factory guys all said 'Vee-ga'. I know another person who supplied parts to the Boston Company, who also says 'Vee-ga'...

I've always been a 'Vay-ga' guy myself; that was the only way I ever heard it in the Mid West, where I learned to speak English. But I've come to the conclusion that 'Vee-ga' is probably more correct in a banjo context; and I'm trying to move my own speech pattern in that direction.
