Currently have the Goldtone BG150f looking to upgrade thinking about the either the Goldtone OB250+ or the Deering 'Sierra' Banjo any thoughts ? All comments Welcome

I used to have a Goldtone BG250,a few years ago,i just got back into the banjo with a Goldtone Cripple Creek 100 RP,i also had a goodtime,i would think that eather of them would be superb,spose the best way would be to have a try of them both,see which you like etc,myself I like Goldtones,but not tried the Sierra,not that good yet.

Hi Alan, I see on your homepage that you have around £600 to spend, you'll find that even a second-hand 'Sierra' will cost around £1100 so it would depend how much you'd get for your Goldtone part exchange,I've played a couple of Sierras and they are really good banjos, I don't know much about Goldtone banjos even though I own a Goldtone dojo which I enjoy messing about with,anyway good luck on whatever you decide on.

Hi Alan, i've got a sierra and a goldtone todd taylor archtop which is based on the 250+. Both are good but the sierra has more tone, depth and class and never disappoints.
If you're anywhere near me (Retford) you are welcome to try mine.

Banjowen the £600 I had to spend was about 18 months ago when I was looking for my first banjo I wanted to start on the right track and took the members advise on here on eventually chose the Goldtone BG150F , now even more addicted and still practicing every single day I'm feeling
I can justify spending a bit more and looking to upgrade , the only problem I'm facing is in the UK we seem to be very limited on dealers , Andybanjo and Eagle seem to be the only shops that sell a choice of banjos (I won't do postage) so it's pick up only for me.

Hi Alan, I've got an OB250 from Andy Banjo. Can only say that I love it to bits after having tried out over 10 other banjos at Andy's, I don't do mail order either. I've not been playing long and this is my second banjo so no expert but I'm really pleased with it got great sustain and just keeps ringing like a bell. I feel I'm not getting the best out of it but that's my ability not any limitations on the instrument I think it has plenty to offer. You're welcome to swing by to have a go if your are down my way being a fellow southener, or drop in on Andy, they are great people very helpful and will give you all the time you need.

Do yourself a favour, and look at the RK range of Banjo's. I have a 35, and i wouldnt swap it for the world. They are a bit hard to get hold of this side of the Water (got mine from germania)they are great Banjo's :-)

It's a great shame that there is no dealers in the uk that stock Deering, GoldTone and Recording King under the same roof , I think geek has the largest selection of banjos in my price range , brought my GoldTone Bg140f from Andybanjo works and been extremely happy with it so I'm tempted by the OB250+ , but hear somany good points of the Eagle II , Sierra and RK36 not easy is this is it lol thanks all for your comments much appreciated .

On that point as anyone got any thoughts on the wider neck banjos I've notice the OB 250+ can be purchased with a slightly wider neck 33mm I believe can anyone point out the pros and cons of a wider neck ?

I'm no expert but I considered this route when looking for my new banjo and got a bit of advice that I think is quite good. If you go for a wide neck banjo then you are going to find it really hard picking up somebody else's normal neck to play making jamming even harder for yourself. I've got a fist full of sausages myself and whilst I do think it does make progress slower it is a case of perseverance and winning through in the end.

Have you had a look at Hobgoblin shops they stock some deerings and GoldTone. The Flinthill which is allegedly the same as a Recording King are available from Andy Banjo. Had a go on one when I was trying to decide which was best and found the tone a bit nasal in comparison to the Orange Blossom.

Agree with my old mate Banjules - try to get to as many shops as you can and try them out until you find one you like more than your current banjo.
Asking what banjo to buy is like asking what car is the best - 100 people will give you 300 answers! Only with banjo players it's even worse than that - of 100 people, 75 will instantly say "if it's not American it's a cheap copy" and ignore the fact that a good chunk of US brands are made in the far east, the rest will then fight amongst themselves as to whether Ozark is better than RK or Gold Tone - it's always like the scene in The Life of Brian where they discuss whether it's the People's Front of Judea or the Popular Front or the Judean People's Front...
Try as many as you can and go for the one you like the sound of and feel most comfortable holding and playing.

Eagle Music has a Deering open day this Saturday 08/11/14 .
They also have the Deering Eagle II , Deering Sierra, Goldtone OB250+ and a Recording King R85 all in the same place , something tells me I have to pull out all the stops and just get up there !
