A total newbie to the banjo, its just something that Ive fancied playing for the last couple of years and got one today as a bday pressie. Its nothing special just a stagg 5 string from Mannsmusic (via Amazon) tho very pleased with its build quality and tone although I dont have anything to otherwise compare it with. Never played strings before so this is a real learning curve for me, have found a local tutor and hoping to make contact in the next couple of months or so but also following a dvd from the rookie series to get a basic grasp of the rolls etc. Currently living and working in South Devon and look forward to chatting on here with you guys in the future, regards Andy

There seem to be a few local banjo players Ive spotted on a local fb site for Devon, and also noticed that there is a cornish festival later in the year which may be tempting just for the ride....
	davemacdon says: 5/5/2014 2:03:28 AM I too have a Stagg. Perfectly acceptable and usable banjo for learning. The advice I have received is that to increase the sound greatly, you need to spend a lot more. Not sure how true this is, but when trying 6 or 7 hundred pound store banjos, I feel there is little sound difference that promotes spending that money. Keep playing, practising and when you play tune(s) that people recognise, use that as a springboard to play and practice more.
