i'm considering buying a banjo from a US hangout member, and i was wondering if i'll be clobbered by import duty!, might not be such a good deal if the taxman wants his pound of flesh!! any info lads?

I fear it may be a clobbering - I looked into this before buying my RK (from Scotland) and couldn't find a cheap, legal, feasible way of doing it.

At worst it will be 25% extra, as on top of import duty you even have to pay tax on the shipping. I know this because I have suffered!

for me was fortunate was able to pick my hatfield up when i went to banjo camp so saved on postage and duty,do you now any one going over there that would be willing to collect it for you

Only way to do it is Go over, and bring it back with you. I have done it, and wasnt Charged a Bean. But if you get anything Shipped over from the US with a Value of over $10 you will be Charged Import Duty on a Sliding Scale depending on the Items Value. Try looking at other Places in the EU. I got my RK from Germany it Arrived within 4 Days, and i Saved a Packet !

thanks lads, i was thinking.. (well, clutching at straws!) i would be buying from an "individual" not a company, so who would know if money changed hands! not worth the trip the US, not a very expensive banjo! but a good deal if i can get it here!!

Problem is that you are charged the tax on the declared value on the insurance docs or the value the seller puts down, plus of course vat on the shipping. So even if the seller ticked the gift box, he'd have to send it un-insured for you not to get 22% import taxes.
Hand made on off "unique items and antiques (items over100 years old) have a duty of 0 - 5% duty so you could ask the seller to put that on the customs forms.....

I've bought about half a dozen banjos from the states and took a chance with the insurance by asking seller to declare the banjo as a $300 banjo and got away with it but if it was to get lost or damaged you'd have to bare the loss.
Ask the seller to use ups to send it. They have their own customs clearing dept so the package never leaves their facilities so there is less chance of it getting lost in the international parcel hub in Coventry. Ups charge more, but do tend to be far quicker and look after their parcels unlike Parcelfarce.

At various times I have brought back 5 guitars, a uke, an erhu, a mandolin and a banjo + several items of ham radio gear and even a Tektronix oscilliscope. In all cases I have had them as carry on baggage, dispensing with standard packaging and treating as second-hand (many of the instruments were in fact 2nd or 3rd hand anyway). However I was always on a USA trip anyway for these - whether holiday or business.
For lower cost items, the EU route seems well worth investigating.

You will be clobbered by HMR taxes have been lowered so you will pay from £15.00 instead of the £25.00 that was the payment prior to the greedy little so and so's dropping it and I got caught paying TWICE AS MUCH haft American charges as well.

As neillconnor got done so did I as due to the packaging the banjo pro stand that was purchased for me was broken. I contacted JMC and they remembursed all the American costs including the sipping fees, but the HMR demanded that I return the stand so they could decided weather it was damaged bewond repair before deciding if the would refund the taxes. As I it was in a multitude of pieces I disposed of the bites in the dust bin, so I took photo's of it in the rubbish but they still insisted I send all the bites to them before consideration. This farical episode took three months of writing and phone calls before I gave up and called them thieving ***'* of ***ches. so contact them and inquire first!!!!!
