bart_brush says: 8/19/2014 4:51:18 PM Hi Angelo, I haven't heard Wade Mainer's version, but I play it thumb lead style in standard G, starting on the open 4th string (D). So the first phrase goes like this: The words "Do-own in" = 4th string, 4th string 2nd fret, 3rd string open. "the wi-i-low" = 3rd string open, 2nd string open, 3rd string 2nd fret, 2nd string open. "gar-den" = 2nd string 3rd fret (slide up to this with your left index finger), 2nd string 5th fret (use left ring finger, OR fret at 4th fret with left middle finger and bend or slide up to the 5th fret pitch . I get all these melody notes with my thumb, and fill in the spaces with pinches, bum-diddies and bum-a-diddies. Also, I learned it from Roscoe Holcomb's recording, which is in 4/4, not the more common waltz time. In the refrain, the high note can be plucked either with the right thumb on the open 5th string, or with the right index on the 1st string 5th fret. The high note is on the second syllable of "pa-pa"---- "My-y pa-PA al-wa-ays told me, his money would set me-e free..."
