I first heard Roscoe Holcomb on the Folkways recording "The Music of Roscoe Holcomb and Wade Ward. I was 16 at the time and just beginning to play the banjo from the red edition Pete Seeger book. I really liked the 2-finger pieces and was especially taken with the picture of Roscoe. I learned a few of the tunes from that album, Hills of Mexico, Trouble in Mind, and also had gotten the Mt. Music of Ky. album and listened extensively to that. In July 1973, just short of turning 19 I took the Greyhound bus from Rochester, NY to Hazard, Ky with the intent to visit Roscoe. I walked about 7 miles south from Hazard and by luck got picked up by a man that worked checking natural gas wells in the area. We a short conversation about why the hell was I out here, but this man knew where everyone lived. He drove me directly to the road where Roscoe lived. There he was. I walked up that hill, sat in that swing, and slept overnight on the floor. Gotta run just now but I will continue later.
