Gig Gourds

From Gordy Ohliger on 7/6/2012 2:00:58 PM

I took a few photos this spring and thought I'd share 'em. My little stash of gourd banjos which include the two that Bob Thornburg made for me.
That very sweet big gourd m'banza on the left had a coming-out-party when we played in a concert this spring. (The Oaksong Society for Way Cool Music) I was booked a year and two months ago for it and assembled a quartet for the gig. Even though I've made a living out of solo banjo-work (It worked for Pete.) They would only book me if I had a band. So I assembled The Usual Suspects and we cooked. TIP: Get all Pros.
The gist of it was an overview of banjo styles 1830-1950...so for
ZIP COON (1836)~ I started it out with gourd banjo, adding the fiddle, bones, and then a bass. It went over great and more importantly sounded amazing! I just love the sound of that thing!  Way deep!
I was actually feeling unfaithful  setting aside the first one he gave me. (On the right.) It's still my top favorite! The sound and neck completely works for me.
In the middle, is the one commissioned from Clark Bueling, about 1994. It is now my on-the-road player which I use for schools. You know how things get knocked about in some gigs.
As a player or luthier you may note that it is not balanced; being too neck heavy. It's just a bit treble for my liking too, but gets the job done in that context.
In general terms, within this last decade of my playing; I've been edging towards bigger pots, or no picks, using a mute, etc... seeking mellower tones. It's all in my own preference right now. Of course when the gig warrants it, I'll punch the volume up with my Vega and picks, no problem.
I have one of these next to my desk at all times for emotional release!
