Back from Marty Stuart Gig

From joemac on 1/31/2011 12:10:07 AM

Well gang i've never seen or heard anything like this gig, the musicianship was second to none. Marty took to the stage with a basic four piece line up, Telecaster, bass and drums plus himself. Smacked us right in the face with "Ridin the bluegrass express" openin shot , twin telecaster lead and four part on the chourus, hillbilly rock followed and all you would expect.  Half way through and the band left the stage to Marty for some solo work so out came the Martin for "black mnt rag"  "dear ol dixie" "i am a pilgrim"  He plays with so much punch and he accents beautifully.  Then The Mandolin with Soldiers Joy, i honestly think the guy is the top when it comes to Mandolin.  Back came the band and played some country standards but the highlight for me was the fact that Marty was using Clarence Whites Telecaster complete with B bender and two Kieth pegs and he along with his guitarist did a dedication of tunes to Clarence with twin teli's in harmony, now i know your going to understand how good that was. So there you have it guys,  Dont let the man pass through your way without going  along............One Great Gig.

He is a multi-talented guy. I heard he was also something of a photographer and took a lot of pictures of the bluegrass greats (well, he had access) including Big Mon. His mando playing was always fast and clean as could be. I think he also has an incredible guitar collection - maybe Hank Williams gtr?
Wish I could have been there!

Great report Joe. Ive met Marty a few time thru the years and he was always a cool guy to talk to. He has one of THE premier guitar collections in the world. He can pick the fool out of anything he picks up. Im glad to got to see him live.

I very nearly got to play live with Marty on the BBC at the British Country Music awards. I was playing mandolin with the Down County Boys and we were up for an award as Britain's Best Bluegrass Band, which we won. Marty wanted a band to back him on his tune "Marty Goes to the Moon". As he was playing mandolin, he decided on the day that I was surplus to requirements but he let me play his old Gibson mandolin which he has had all the famous people he's met sign. All the signatures are scratched into the surface probably using a coin or something. He also gave me a couple of sets of George Gruhn strings. My memory of him is a really lovely guy with time for everybody. I seem to remember he could play a bit as well :-)
