How the wood has aged

From momo on 9/17/2016 10:56:31 AM

I have several Stellings from the 1990's you be surprised how the wood rim has aged over the years and the tone has become so rich & sweet... its very noticeable. I wonder if Geoff Stelling has noticed this seeing how he has had hands on his Banjos since the mid 70's has he noticed his instruments becoming sweet and seasoned over the years, due to playing and age.

Wood does change with age, over time the wood becomes dryer and somewhat oddly hydrophobic which is a bit counter intuitive considering the wood is dryer. Thermally aging outdoor lumber is done to achieve the water repellency and is done in oxygen free kilns. Lots of guitars and banjo parts are now being thermally aged or torrified and this does favorably affect the tone or so some say and I agree with that belief.

I have a 1990 Shelling and it has definitely mellowed. Fantastic ok nstruments Stallings are. I also have a 2000 and it is the finest banjo I have ever owned.
