I have been a Stelling owner since 1990. I fell in love with Stelling in 1981 but could never afford one until '90- now I have two of them and won't ever part with them. Something kind of interesting is that I had never taken one apart for anything, just never saw the need to and always had other things that needed doing. A month or two ago I was thinking the action was a little high on one of mine and so started tinkering and next thing I knew I had taken it mostly apart. I was fascinated by the craftsmanship of the rim and the way all the parts fit together. I decided to start a database of photos of banjo parts at that moment. Have a look-
I keep going back to that and looking at the Stelling rim. That is a thing of beauty. The curve, the finish, the tiny channel in there for the flange... amazing. Geoff and company do an amazing job on those instruments.
When I put it back together, I made a few adjustments and that banjo sounds better than ever now. It is a Whitestar and I put it up against any banjo I have ever played as far as tone and playability. Damn fine instrument.
