Tailpiece Adjustment

From CAPT Steve on 7/22/2016 7:13:48 PM

Hey Stelling friends--

Was reading a recent topic that mentioned adjusting the Stelling tailpiece to alter tone.  I know you can adjust the downforce tension by raising or lowering the tailpiece in relationship to the head.  Geoff's tailpieces also allow the tailpiece to be adjusted in or out.  What is the purpose of this; what change does this make to the tone?  Thanks,

Steve

I think the side adjustment ability is just to provide a stable contact to keep the tailpiece straight in line with the bridge. If you have a Presto that thing can go places on you pretty easily if it wants to or you bump it accidentally.

My question was regarding moving the tailpiece closer or further from the head's tension hoop, hence closer or further from the bridge. I'd read something that it affected tone, was just wondering what the nature of tha t change was.

farther from the bridge = more sustain closer to the bridge = more stuccato

Mike (Railo)--Ah, thank you; that's what I was wondering and looking for!

Alan Munde and Bill Emerson like the Tailpiece pulled back... I like the stock setting.

I like the Alan Munde sound. I backed my tail piece away from the bridge a couple of turns 7 or 8 yrs ago and left it that way. I love the tone of the banjo but I still don't sound like Alan. Dang it!!!!
