Red Fox set up report

From pdbanjo on 3/2/2011 7:54:11 AM

I installed a new 5 Star Stewmac head and a 2g snuffy smith I bridge. Those simple changes brought it out of its darkeness and now it has a crisp and powerful voice once again. It needs some time for those parts to mesh together but it has the potential of becoming my main instrument. When I first purchased this banjo it was so bright and ringy that I had a great set-up guy purposely make it as sound as dark as he could. That set-up worked extremely well for recording purposes so I never changed it back basically because he had kept the original Stelling head and bridge that  was on it. It sat cased in my closet for many years because it wasn't a great preformance or jam instrument. However, for the first time in 9 years it is going with me this weekend to a gig and will be used as a backup for awhile until I finish tweeking the set up. It may just replace my old TB-1 that I have played exclusively for many years.

Nice to hear about the setup change. Was there a specific change that you expect to get out of the Snuffy Smith bridge? I'm looking to raise the bridge a bit on my Staghorn, so I'm seeing what my options are.

Ragaisis,
Prior to this 2.0g SSI, I've tried a 2.6g Scorpion, 2.4g Katzeye and a 2.0g No name that I suspect is an old StewMac and all have been 11/16ths. I'm trying to bring it back to playable and hopefully with a voice that isn't stark/harsh on the attack or have ringy/overtones on the decay. This current set-up seems to be pretty close to what I want to hear. I may try a new Stelling bridge later just for grins.

I'd love to hear how the new Stelling bridge compares. Banjo comes full circle!
