Stelling case question

From Craig_B on 6/6/2016 7:43:43 AM

Over the 34 years I've owned my Staghorn, much of that time was spent with the banjo in the case, resting on its side (the hinge side, obviously). That's resulted in the banjo rotating in the case, to the point where the headstock is actually in contact with the side of the case. That by itself is bothersome, but it occurred to me the other day that it might be dangerous to the head and/or neck, if it's sitting in the car or something and I hit a bump in the road.

Has anyone else here experienced a problem like this? It looks like the issue is the result of one or more of the following: 1) there's a cushion under the resonator near the neck heel, and none under any other part of the resonator - this seems to tilt the banjo "up," moving the headstock toward the lid; 2) this makes the neck not rest down in the scoop of the neck cradle, even though there's a pad on the lid, right above it, that should press it down into place.

It's been suggested to me that I check an upholstery shop to have the interior of the case reupholstered. I don't know if they do that sort of thing often, and I haven't made any calls on that yet - thought I'd toss this out to see if anyone else has dealt with something like it first.

Geoff, if you happen to read this, I sent an email to the company address a couple weeks ago with a detailed description and a couple photos. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Craig,
In the 34 years you've owned that banjo, we've used three different case companies. Cases do wear out just like everything else. Our new cases are made by TKL in Virginia and a new one might be less expensive than reupholstering the old one.

Thanks, Geoff. You're probably right, even if I could find someone qualified to do it.

Can you tell me what a new "official issue" Stelling case would cost me? While I'm not real concerned myself with collector value (that will be for my nephew to worry about after I'm gone), getting a new case might be better from that standpoint than modifying the old one.

Never mind, Geoff. I see it on your website.
