Stelling Wins Flathead Tone Shootout

From banjoez on 6/1/2015 6:53:38 AM

For those that missed it I did a blind sound comparison recently to see how six different popular flathead banjos compared to each other based on member votes. There were some highly regarded prewar style masterclones in the mix and one Stelling thrown in just for kicks. Guess who won? Here is the post.

I hope Geoff still reads these blogs, he should get a kick out of this one.

I still read these blogs and find them all very interesting. I posted a reply to the actual playing of all the banjos which was on a different thread. All were fine sounding banjos in my opinion. Good picking, Joe.

By the way Geoff, some of the guys on the comparison thread are interested in hearing a little bit about the evolution of your banjos, especially the more recent ones. I know you probably get tired of telling the story but there are always newer pickers who are unaware. Thanks.

Joe,
I'd be glad to share any thoughts I had about any model that has been introduced. I'd appreciate some guidance so that I know upon which models to expound.

By the way, Joe, is your Home Page photo of you supposed to look like Kilroy without the eyes and nose? That's what it makes me think of.... Apparently, you were here!

My 1976 Bellflower, 119-3 is made of Japanese Birch? How many banjos did you make out of that wood? I know you've stated that you made it for Buddy Blackmon. Is that the only one you made for him?

Geoff, I call it Granadarise as opposed to Earthrise. LOL

Ks 5-picker,
Japanese birch was the wood. We made several hundred I suppose.
Joe,
Granadarise, eh? Whatever....

Geoff, has your tone ring ever undergone any significant changes in alloy or dimensional/weight changes throughout it's run? Also, how did you come up with the final alloy and dimensions?

I just got back from a road trip to Geoff Stelling's shop on VA. I have a 2011 custom Stelling and it was badly in need of a setup. Just want everyone to know what a gentleman Geoff is. He spent so much time with us, showed us around the shop and gave me a setup tutorial as he worked on my banjo. Taking the road trip from NJ, rather than shipping the banjo, was a great decision. Great Guy!, Great Banjos!
