Looking at some vintage Stellings and started seeing the ebanol fret board. What's the history? What were the merits and why did the experiment end?

swamplunker says: 6/1/2015 10:04:19 AM I actually called Mr. Stelling and spoke to him about this. Rather than some grand experiment, it seems that regular Ebony started becoming difficult to obtain around 1977, and he sourced Ebanol as a replacement, it was the same stuff Ovation was using for their fingerboards.When that started getting inconsistent in quality a few years later, and Ebony was once again available, he switched back.

Much of the Ebonol worked well, but some had serious problems with sunlight and heat, plus, being basically a plastic, it shrunk and caused many a fingerboard to go concave. I have successfully heat-treated many of those problem fingerboards, but a few had to be replaced with ebony.
