capos?

From John Schleich on 3/6/2015 3:28:03 AM

I'm looking for a new capo for my Crusader Deluxe. It has a custom neck most noticeably from first to fifth frets. Any suggestions greatly appreciated, John

I'd bite the bullet and get a McKinney. They're high, but you will never ever ever need another one.

I agree that the McKinney is a great capo but you may want to consider something like THE ULTIMATE BANJO CAPO because it will actually give the ability to capo at the 5th fret whereas the closed type only go as far as the 4th.

Yep that's right, but...you can get it in a C if I'm not mistaken. But I don't use a C capo anymore, I do everything up to B and then play in C position. But McKinney's are $100 thereabouts...

Here's a great example of what a Stelling banjo sounds like capoed at a higher fret... I think it's actually in D. I sure do miss Bill playing his Stelling, anyway check this great, great song out.

sorry, just checked it's in C but he's got the capo on that 5th fret for sure.

Yeah that sounds powerful doesn't it. Mine seems like the horsepower starts going up if I get in B. I think Elliot capos came in a C, but those kinds of capos are high. It might save a few bucks to go with an ultimate.

I don't own the Ultimate and so I've just been using my old Schubb but guess what, my Virginian doesn't sound as powerful as Bill's but that's probably because I'm not Bill. I have a fairly new head on mine and it's tune to around a G#. I do think that my power goes up a notch when I tighten it up to around an A though.

You know it just occurred to me that it would be possible to just capo AT&T the 4th and simply tune up a balk step and that may contribute to more power as well.... Just thinking?

Stupid auto correct... maybe I should proof read before posting. LOL

Any capo that clamps down good, has a good strong threaded screw, leather or rubber so it don't hurt the neck..is good. I've just always had a McKinney. Then there were McKinney Elliott, idk if that's what they are now. But they're pretty much indestructible. Mine are 22 years old now. How do you like your crusader? I'm wanting a Virginian like drew has, I have a staghorn I'd trade...
