From lwmguy on 2/13/2015 5:29:45 AM

How do you know when it is time for new frets?  What difference does it make?

I would think by looking and how well she plays in tune.

When the frets get badly worn, you will start hearing buzzes, as the string contacts the next fret (toward the bridge). If the divots in the frets are not too deep, you can have them dressed down, but when they get to a certain point, they need to be replaced, I had mine replaced with SS frets and I love them. They should last as long as I will be able to play the banjo.
