Fox coming my way

From redduke1199 on 2/13/2015 10:46:24 AM

Hi All

Today I laid down my hard-earned on a Red Fox.

I have been playing guitars for many years in bands but over the last few months I have been listening to a lot of country music on youtube and especially the banjo.

I started looking at all the makes and models you can get nowadays and I finally got down to 2 banjos. The Deering.John Hartford and the Fox. I love the sound of both of them. Even to my untrained ear they are completely different of course.

Due to my location I couldn't try them out.

I was listening to the Osbourne Brothers last night and that made my mind up as I can only just afford one of them.

So I ordered it today and it'll will be sent to me after the setup. It's going to seem like an eternity before it arrives, I'm sure.

I'll let you know /hear how I'm getting on with it.

Cheers,

Simon

Congrats. I went through a similar dilemma a few years back between a Red Fox and a Sullivan Bardstown. Went with the Red Fox and never looked back.

Anyone else here also own a Nechville? Or compared your Stelling to a Nechville? I have a Virginian and a Phantom and they are two very different instruments... just curious if there are any other opinions before I share mine.

You will love the Red Fox. I have owned one for 15 years or so and they are great banjos. Built like a tank and sounds sooooo good!

I'm tracking the order. It has left the UK and is heading down to France. ETA is Tuesday. It's going to be a long 4 days!

Hankster2, I have a Nechville Zeus and a Stelling Sunflower. I like them both, but they are different. Both quality craftsmanship by great builders with great sound. I find myself playing the Nechville more because I prefer a radiused fretboard, where the Sunflower's is flat, and adjustments are quick and easy. I didn't care for the stock Zeus sound, but after removing the spheres and installing an archtop tone ring, it's awesome. But then so is the Stelling. They're both great, that's about all I can say, except that the Stelling requires more cleaning and polishing, so I hesitate to take that one out to festivals as often. Geoff's been at it so long that he's go it down to what he wants a banjo to be. He's also very responsive after the sale, which is nice. The rest of the sound is set up. You can't go wrong with a Stelling. I have 4 or 5 friends who play them. Not a complaint among them, and they're all strong banjos. You won't outgrow a Stelling. It will take you wherever you have the skills to take it, if you know what I mean. The Red Fox is particularly attractive too.

Got my 2013 Stelling Sunflower last year and all I ever said was, "why did I wait so long to get a Stelling?"

You'll love it. I think Munde still plays his. Been playing my Challenge Top Tension for about a year and it keeps getting better and better.

She's arrived! The start of a long and happy relationship, I'm sure.
In tune after a 600 mile journey through the postal systems. Impressive!
