Need a History Lesson

From DrBillM on 12/25/2014 9:45:20 AM

Merry Xmas

I am looking around at older Stellings and am pretty sure I want walnut. As best I can tell, that's Staghorn, Bellflower, older Golden Cross ( till when?), Masterflower, Gospel and then Masters Cross. What else have I missed?

Happy Holidays,

Here's the current lineup of banjos:

Your list of Walnut (also my choice of wood for
any banjo) Stellings seem correct to me. Keep in
mind there have been several, custom Stellings
made over the yr's with alt. wood choices (walnut
instead of maple, etc): so you may find an older
Stelling model with walnut which might suprise you.

Just a thought: if by chance you're interested in
a custom model, I do know both cherry & birch have
been used for a few custom models over the yr's:

Dr. Bill,
I have a walnut Staghorn from 1980 with standard engraving in near mint condition. It's shown on my website's classified page. If someone doesn't buy it, I'll just keep it. Please let me know if you're interested.
Geoff

Geoff- The Staghorn looks great. I probably need to move into the Stelling universe in a less financially committed sort of way. If you keep it, and someday I can afford it, I'll come calling. Did I miss any other walnuts? I saw the Whitestar was walnut at one point. Was it always ?When was the walnut to maple shift for the Golden Cross?

I think a walnut Whitestar would be an exception to the rule. Generally they were maple or birch, though some are stained with a dark walnut stain. I love the simple inlays on them though and I think they're one of the greatest values on the banjo market.

Geoff, I had to go to the website to see the Staghorn you mentioned. The new webiste looks great!

The first Whitestar was walnut and a lefty. Then they were mahogany for a couple of years. Then they were unstained maple three and then two piece necks with a black stringer. Then they were walnut stained maple one piece in the '80's. Now they are extinct.

Sounds like the Whitestars had more personalities than Sybil. Thanks for the info.

So a 1979 Whitestar could be Mahogany or the unstained Maple. Still waiting on pic from the seller. Thanks for any info.
